How to Remove Oil Stains from Concrete

Items Needed: Nylon Bristle Scrub Brush, Kitty Litter (or Sawdust), Liquid Dish Soap, Hot Water, Paper Towels

Step 1: If there is a greasy puddle in your driveway, you want to clean it up as soon as possible. Oil and grease soak into concrete and asphalt and will leave a stain. Use Newspaper, paper towels or an old rag to clean up as much as possible. Blot the excess oil off the surface and dispose of the towels safely.

Step 2: Spread a thick layer of kitty litter or sawdust over the stain to absorb excess grease or oil. Allow the kitty litter or sawdust to sit for 24 hours.

Step 3: Gently sweep away the kitty litter or sawdust and dispose of properly.

Step 4: Apply liquid dish soap and hot water to the stain and the surrounding area. Once you have a rich lather of soap, use the nylon bristly scrub brush and vigorously scrub the stain.

Step 5: Use the kitty litter or sawdust to soak up the dirty soap mixture. Once the majority of the mixture is absorbed, you may dispose of the kitty litter or sawdust. You may also clean the foam by blotting the surface with paper towels. You do not want to wash the soapy mixture into your yard or the street because it is toxic.

Step 6: Once you have absorbed as much of the oil as possible, carefully rinse the area with hot water.

Some stains require several scrubbing attempts. This method also work on older stains. If you are attacking a tough stain, repeat steps number 2 and 3 as many times as needed. Let the kitty litter soak up the oil for a full 24 hours and then remove and pour fresh kitty litter on the stain to sit for another 24 hours.

Note: Avoid using wire brushes. They can scratch the surface of your driveway, resulting in a permanent scar. Oil and grease are flammable; use care when disposing of contaminated items.
